How to Measure for Your New Window Blinds

Measuring for your new blinds couldn't be simpler. It's an easy way to save lots of money and takes just minutes; you'll wish you'd done it sooner!

Standard Windows

Inside Recess Measuring Guide (Recess Fitting)

1

Measure the Width

Measure in 3 places: top, middle, and bottom of the recess. Use the smallest measurement.

  • For roller blinds and no-drill blinds: Measure at the top of the recess
  • Use a metal tape measure (cloth ones can stretch)
  • Don't make any deductions - we'll do that for you
2

Measure the Height/Drop

Measure in 3 places: left, center, and right of the recess. Use the smallest measurement.

  • Measure from the top of the recess to the sill
  • If there's no sill, measure to where you want the blind to finish
  • For roller blinds: measure to the sill or 1-2cm above
3

Check Recess Depth

Ensure your recess is deep enough for your chosen blind type:

Blind Type Minimum Depth Required
25mm Venetian Blind30mm
Roller Blind (Top-Fix)50mm
Roman Blind50mm
Vertical Blind75mm
Wooden Venetian (25mm)55mm
Pleated Blinds45mm

Exact Fit Measuring Guide (Exact Fitting)

1

Measure for Overlap

Measure the exact size of the area you want the blind to cover:

  • Overlap window recess by at least 70mm at the top
  • Overlap by 50mm on each side
  • Bottom overlap is personal choice (consider radiators)

Bay Windows

Measuring for bay windows requires special attention. Choose the correct guide for your bay type:

Angled Bay Windows

Measure each window separately. Note the angles between windows (typically 45° or 30°).

Square Bay Windows

Measure width and height of each section. Include the full span of the bay for curtains.

How to Measure for Carpets

Proper measurement ensures you order the right amount of carpet and avoid costly mistakes.

Step-by-Step Carpet Measuring Guide

1

Prepare Your Room

  • Remove all furniture from the room
  • Clear any obstacles
  • Ensure good lighting
  • Have graph paper ready for drawing
2

Measure Room Dimensions

Measure at the widest points:

  • Measure width in 3 places: near walls, middle
  • Measure length in 3 places
  • Record the largest measurements
  • Round up to the nearest 10cm
3

Account for Pattern & Pile Direction

  • Add 10cm for pattern matching
  • Consider pile direction (arrows on back)
  • Add 5cm for trimming
  • Consider doorways and transitions
4

Calculate Total Area

Use this formula: Length (m) × Width (m) = Area (m²)

Example: Room is 4.5m × 3.2m = 14.4m²

Add 10% for waste and cutting: 14.4m² + 1.44m² = 15.84m²

Order 16m² to be safe

Important Tips

  • Always measure in meters
  • Include doorways and alcoves
  • Note any irregularities
  • Consider carpet width (typically 4m or 5m)

Wastage Calculator

Add wastage based on room shape:

  • Simple room: 10% wastage
  • Complex room: 15% wastage
  • Patterned carpet: 15-20% wastage

How to Measure for LVT Flooring

Luxury Vinyl Tile requires precise measurement for proper installation and minimal waste.

LVT Flooring Measuring Guide

1

Prepare the Area

  • Clear the room completely
  • Remove existing flooring if necessary
  • Check subfloor condition
  • Note room shape and obstacles
2

Measure Room Area

For rectangular rooms:

Length × Width = Total Area

For irregular rooms:

Break into rectangles, measure each, then add together

3

Account for Wastage

LVT typically requires 5-10% wastage:

  • Simple layout: 5% wastage
  • Complex layout: 10% wastage
  • Diagonal layout: 15% wastage
  • Patterned LVT: 10-15% wastage
4

Calculate Planks Needed

Formula: (Room Area + Wastage) ÷ Plank Coverage = Number of Planks

Example: Room = 20m², 10% wastage = 22m² total

Plank size: 1m² per pack (typically 2.0m × 0.23m)

22m² ÷ 1m² per pack = 22 packs needed

Pro Tips for LVT Measurement

Direction Considerations

LVT typically runs parallel to the longest wall. Consider light sources and room shape.

Transition Strips

Measure for transition strips between rooms and different flooring types.

Underfloor Heating

If you have underfloor heating, ensure LVT is compatible and note special requirements.

How to Measure for Laminate Wood Flooring

Laminate flooring is measured differently due to expansion gaps and plank patterns.

Laminate Flooring Measuring Guide

1

Basic Room Measurement

Measure length and width of the room in meters at the widest points.

Formula: Length × Width = Area

2

Add Wastage Allowance

Laminate requires more wastage due to click system:

  • Straight lay (parallel to walls): 8% wastage
  • Diagonal installation: 12% wastage
  • Herringbone pattern: 15% wastage
  • Complex rooms: 10-12% wastage
3

Account for Expansion Gap

Laminate flooring expands and contracts. You must leave:

  • 10mm expansion gap around all edges
  • 10mm at doorways and transitions
  • 10mm around pipes and columns
  • Gaps will be covered by skirting or beading
4

Calculate Packs Required

Step 1: Room Area × Wastage % = Total Area

Step 2: Total Area ÷ Coverage per Pack = Number of Packs

Step 3: Round up to nearest whole pack

Important Considerations

  • Subfloor must be level (±3mm over 2m)
  • Underlay is essential for most laminate
  • Acclimatize flooring for 48 hours
  • Check moisture levels before installation
  • Door frames may need undercutting
  • Consider room shape for plank direction

How to Measure for Underlay & Accessories

Underlay is measured based on the flooring area, with additional considerations for different rooms.

Underlay Measuring Guide

1

Calculate Room Area

Use the same measurements as your flooring:

  • Underlay is sold by m² or roll size
  • Measure total room area
  • No need to add wastage (but 5% for safety is recommended)
2

Underlay Thickness by Floor Type

Flooring Type Recommended Underlay
Laminate2-5mm foam or combi-layer
Engineered Wood3-5mm with moisture barrier
LVT/Luxury Vinyl1.5-2mm acoustic underlay
Carpet8-12mm high density foam
3

Accessories Measurement

Skirting Boards: Measure perimeter of the room in meters

Door Bars/Transition Strips: Count number of doorways and width

Scotia/Trims: Room perimeter minus doorways

Adhesive/Glue: 1 liter covers approximately 8-10m²

Underlay Comparison by Room Type

Room Type Recommended Underlay Key Benefits
Living Room/Bedroom 7-9mm Acoustic Underlay Comfort, sound reduction, warmth
Kitchen/Bathroom Waterproof Underlay Moisture protection, stability
Ground Floor 5-7mm with DPM Damp protection, insulation
Upper Floor 4-5mm Acoustic Sound insulation, impact reduction
Conservatory Thermal Underlay Temperature control, UV resistance

Accessories Measuring Guide

Trims & Reducers

Measure the width of doorways and transition points. Standard lengths: 2.4m or 2.7m.

Adhesives

LVT adhesive: 3-4m² per liter. Carpet grippers: 1 pack per 3m of wall.

Moisture Barrier

Measure total floor area. Add 100mm overlap between sheets.
